Project Merlin offers a compelling solution to this painful problem!
Current graffiti abatement techniques are ineffective…
While current graffiti abatement techniques focus on after the fact solutions, Project Merlin is a sensor capable of detecting the event before the damage has been completed. With the graffiti sensor a signal can be sent to dispatch within seconds of the first mark made allowing very little time for the perpetrator to get away fro the scene.
It is a small, cost effective solution with multiple sensor types to provide reliable, accurate, and precise event detection.
Merlin is the most cost effective solution available today.
Details: • Graffiti is a $22 billion annual problem in the United States • Statistics show that graffiti is likely to happen in all types of communities • Graffiti threatens the livelihood of businesses by detracting customers and deterring real estate transactions • Business and property owners are required to clean up the graffiti with applicable fines and clean up fees

| Pros: |
The units work and can be placed in different locations as needed. Alarm can go to several people at once or to your dispatch. Alarm comes in less than a minute after tagger starts spraying. Respond and make the arrest. |
| Cons: |
Charging and changing the batteries every two to two and a half weeks. We get the highway department to recharge and change the batteries. Get an extra battery so you can just swap them out and not have to take the unit down for the 12 hours of charging. |

The system was installed in three different locations within the City of Pinole, CA by employees of CalTrans and we “went live” on April 28, 2009 at 1000 AM. Within six (6) hours of activating our graffiti detectors, the system sent an alert to our dispatch and the Pinole Police Departments Patrol Division and Community Preservation and Safety Division were able to apprehend the suspect.
Since having the system activated, officers of the Pinole Police Department have been able to take five (5) people into custody. Only once was the system activated and a suspect not able to be located. The Pinole Police Department currently monitors three active graffiti monitors within the city.
Members of the Broadband Discovery Team have been helpful and supportive during the start-up process and maintenance process of this program.
